SUPERMAN CONFIDENTIAL

SUPERMAN AT HIS BEST

Last week DC Comics quietly launched a new Superman book entitled “Superman Confidential”. Over the summer, the “Superman”, the 1987 title, ended and “Adventures of Superman” was re-titled as the former. I believed at the time that two Superman titles a month were sufficient and I wasn’t exited about adding (re-adding) a third monthly book. That was, until I got my hands on the first issue.

The creative team that DC has chosen to work on this book is writer Darwyn Cook and artist Tim Sale. Cooke has just recently written “DC: The New Frontier” and is also slated to be the scribe on the new “Spirit” book from DC based on the classic Will Eisner character. Tim Sale is best known as being the artist to team with Jeph Loeb on such Batman classics as “Long Halloween” and “Dark Victory” and his work can currently be seen on the TV series “Heroes” on NBC.
The digenetic world of the book is set in “Superman/Clark Kent’s past. Lois and Clark are not married and Superman isn’t really sure of his powers or of himself. In one line, Clark thinks “To my friends and colleagues, I’m just a farm boy in the big city trying to make his mark. To the rest of Metropolis, I’ve become a protector. A symbol of hope. Me I just hope I don’t screw up.”

Consider this as Superman: Year Two!

Some first issues are confusing and you don’t get much introduction to the story. This tends to  leave the reader wondering should I buy issue two? This book doesn’t suffer from this. It leaves you asking “When does issue two come out? (Psst…December 6th)

The approach is simple, great story and spectacular art. I always enjoy an artist who looks like no other. That is, you can’t describe his style by saying his art looks like this guy or that guy. And the storytelling is the same.

If you feed your comics fix on a more traditional form of the comics’ medium, this is the monthly book for you.
